Industrial EHS Specialist / Coordinator

EHS Specialist provides administrative and technical support to divisions of Sabre Industries, Inc. operating in Alvarado, TX in the development, application and continuous improvement of environmental, health and safety (EHS) management.

The position is responsible for implementing all policies and procedures that comprise the EHS program including, but limited to, evaluation and control of safety and health hazards in the workplace, routine hazard recognition and environmental management and also supports functions by performing routine tasks associated with inspection of necessary equipment. The position will work with managers, supervisors, and employees to minimize environmental exposures, occupational health and safety risks, teach specific safe work habits and manage compliance with applicable regulations.

Principal Accountabilities

• Directly support the Director of Environmental, Health and Safety at Sabre Industries Alvarado facilities to ensure and facilitate compliance with all applicable federal, state, local and company EHS rules and regulations.
• Provide a strong EHS floor presence in production, maintenance and material handling areas of both plants.
• Assist and provide input to the Director of EHS in program development.
• Manage hazardous and non-hazardous waste inspections, identification, containerization, consolidation, labeling, accumulation and shipment for disposal and maintain records of such.
• Assist in the development, implementation and review of protocols for paint usage tracking in the paint booth to ensure compliance with applicable PBR (permit by rule).
• Collect, document and record site EHS monitoring including, but not limited to, area noise measurements and storm water samples.
• Review safety issues and incidents and work with plant leadership and employees to develop plans for resolution.
• Schedule and conduct site EHS compliance inspections, perform records documentation and provide corrective action response recommendations and tracking.
• Support and participate in incident investigations.
• Use a working knowledge of personal, industrial & occupational safety to manage safety programs such as Life Safety Code, Forklift Operations, Hoist & Crane Operations, Lifting Equipment, Job Safety Analysis, Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control, Respiratory Protection, PPE Program, Hazard Communication and other OSHA required programs.
• Assist the Director of EHS in the development of a Monthly Safety Meetings calendar and associated content and assist with the presentation of various topical information as appropriate in order to provide required and appropriate EHS training and to promote safety and hazard awareness.
• Conduct new hire and temporary employee EHS training.
• Support and participate in Safety Committee meetings through meeting attendance, inspection team leadership, findings documentation and corrective measures development and closure tracking.
• Gather and organize pertinent information, statistics and figures to be presented in the form of EHS metrics.
• Maintain EHS files and inventory of EHS forms, supplies, materials and equipment for program use.
• Support and participate in production, shop and maintenance floor audits and prepare and submit maintenance requests as required ensuring corrective actions.
• Collect data and assist in regulatory reporting.
• Assist in the performance of risk assessments to determine the potential hazards of new processes and projects (capital projects and others) and ensure that all applicable Federal, State, and Local regulations, along with industry standards, (ANSI, NFPA, ACGIH) are followed.
• Assist in the process to identify and approve any new chemical under consideration for use at the facility.
• Maintain a current and accurate MSDS database spreadsheet.
• Assist in identifying, developing and implementing EHS cost control measures.
• Develop and implement JSA’s and training programs in the use of safety equipment including PPE, chemical hazards, noise hazards, physical hazards and safe operating practices and assist in the implementation and management of such programs. Maintain recordkeeping as directed.
• Participate in emergency response functions such as material release first responders and First Aid teams.
• Develop and implement emergency evacuation plans and procedures and conduct drills.
• Maintain professional training competencies.

Knowledge, Skills and Educational Requirements

• Minimum of Associate's degree in Occupational Safety or Environmental Health and Safety. A Bachelor’s degree in these or a related field is preferred. Job experience, professional development and continuing education may be substituted for educational experience.
• Good working knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulation relating to environmental, health and safety.
• Experience in managing compliance of environmental, health and safety (personal, industrial & occupational) regulations, policies and procedures.
• Thorough working knowledge of environmental, health and safety principles.
• Good math skills.
• Well developed oral and written communication skills in English. Spanish speaking and writing ability is a plus.
• Ability to utilize computer technology to prepare reports, access data and maintain records.
• Well developed analytical skills and creative problem solving skills to recognize and analyze needs and propose solutions to effectively address them.
• Ability to actively recognize and assimilate the status and impact of current activities and develop appropriate response measures.
• Team player approach and ability to effectively work with people to resolve issues.
• Physical capacity to walk, stand and stoop for 10 hours or more and capability of lifting up to 75 pounds.
• Ability to plan and coordinate multiple diverse tasks simultaneously.
• Experience with database computer skills, word processing, internet search tools, and power point presentation software.
• Valid Driver's license.
